Intelligence

This page describes the various classifications of intelligence used in this wiki.

Intelligence Levels

Non-Neurological

Species with no nervous system or other system which could potentially generate thought. Plants are a good example.

Instinctive

Species with no capacity for thought and are governed purely by automatic instinct.

Bestial

A species of Bestial intelligence demonstrates some basic learning and intelligence, such as hunting tactics, but is not self-aware and does not necessarily have an understanding of what it is doing.

Sentient

A sentient species is one which has demonstrated strong cognitive abilities, such as puzzle-solving or linguistic comprehension, but is not known to demonstrate the traits necessary to qualify as sapient (see below). For example, in the real world, the African Grey Parrot and the Highland Gorilla would qualify as sentient, but not sapient.

Sapient

A sapient or civilized species is defined as one which has demonstrated at least two of the following:

  1. The extensive use of language for communication
  2. The extensive use of tools
  3. The existence of a shared cultural identity or identities, which is passed down from generation to generation

Post-sapient

Post-sapient species have intelligence that is significantly beyond the function of a sapient species; often, it is artificially enhanced.
